Graham Quince Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Some of you have already spotted this tutorial, but we've just updated it to reflect feedback from schools. You can now use the same code 'hack' a menu to open external links, subpages and even sites https://www.frogeducation.com/community/tutorials/frogcode-tutorials/external-links 2
Dylan.baker Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 Hi Graham, i understand it has been a long time since the posting of this tutorial, and it may no longer work under new releases of Frog but i would like to ask a few questions about it. First, is this planned to be a feature available without HTML coding, to be able to have the button disabled or diverted to another page? And second, do you know of a way to make the change this causes replicate across the entire site, without needing a HTML widget with the code in on every page? I can understand if this is no longer relevant but it seems like an important option to us. Thanks, Dylan Baker.
Graham Quince Posted November 9, 2016 Author Posted November 9, 2016 Hi @Dylan.baker The tutorial is relatively new actually. I think there are some long term plans, but it's not on the immediate to-do list. I'd reccomend pushing for more votes on the Ideas Portal http://ideas.frogcommunity.com/ideas/FLRN-I-77 Graham 1
clangstaff Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 @Graham Quince Is it expected behaviour that when moving off the front page containing the code that the link would stop working? We have experienced this - the link works externally when looking at the front page however, when moving on to another page of the site the link simply takes you to the page of that menu item rather than the newly specified external link.
Graham Quince Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 Hi Chris No, as far as I'm aware, that code should work no matter what page you're on. The code sites on the first page to load and continues to run even when not on that page. Is it your website? Graham
clangstaff Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 @Graham Quince Yes it's on our public website - the code is on the homepage but I've changed the link for the 'governors' page. If you click on another page of the site then try the governors link you are taken to the page itself rather than the external link. As a temporary fix I've just added the governors link to the page on the site too. www.holmfirthhigh.co.uk
Graham Quince Posted December 14, 2016 Author Posted December 14, 2016 I've had a look and i think the problem might be linked to one of the other scripts running in the HTML widget. I copied the code out and pasted it onto another page and it worked, there's still an error message on the bottom script tag which disappears when it is in a new widget. 1
clangstaff Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 @Graham Quince Thanks Graham adding the code to a different HTML widget resolved the issue 1
ssteadp Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 I've implemented this, but it doesn't seem to work on mobile devices. On a desktop clicking on the menu item works, even when browser is resized to a mobile size, but on an actual mobile device it takes you to the old page. It's as though click events work, but touch events don't. Anybody else has this issue?

It works but only if you tap the link 5 or 6 times...

johnmorris01 Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Still seems very odd that there isn't built-in functionality by now to just have external links as a menu option! 2
gbligh Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 I've just tried to use this, but am getting the Malformed Javascript error.

Graham Quince Posted March 16, 2018 Author Posted March 16, 2018 I'd hang on about a week, @Simon Law has written a FrogCode widget which does this. @adamw - haven't seen you around, but can you look into approving this please. 1

Graham Quince Posted March 26, 2018 Author Posted March 26, 2018 This one needs the tutorial to be rewritten. Give me a chance!
